Whilst using a thumb size radio remote unit to open a garage door is the norm for most domestic houses and some private carparks, time has moved onto something more efficient. This is not a fantasy; it is the norm of evolution. Good understanding of technologies gives us an edge. This flyer explains how the edge helps in installing a modern automatic and cost-effective carpark entrance access control system.

The LHS diagram shows a tag placed on the inside of the windscreen in lieu of a thumb unit that can be misplaced or stolen and is expensive to replace. The tag is transparent and does not obstruct the driver’s vision. The tag is a printed circuit and contains an antenna as well as a unique ID number for reading by the Reader as shown on the RHS diagram. It is cheap to buy (surprisingly)- less than $10 in 2021 despite its superior capability.

When the car comes into the detection range of the Reader located above the gate, the tag and the Reader shake hands; and the Reader makes an instant decision to open the gate (if the tag is pre-registered as current) or ignore the car. Besides opening the motorized gate, the Reader forwards all tag information to a central recorder for further analysis if needed. The info includes which car has come into the carpark and when, plus a snapshot of the car.

This system uses similar technology as for pedestrian doors that have a reader for sensing an access card in proximity to unlock a magnetic or electric door lock. The main difference is that this system is capable of long range sensing at carpark entrances. This system is safe, reliable and inexpensive to install, operate and maintain. Its components are compliant with open industry standards. Stolen tags can be disabled with a touch of the keyboard and replaced for negligible cost.
